Globalization: causes and effects
Globalization is the system of interaction among the countries of the world in order to develop the global economy. Globalization refers to the integration of economics and societies all over the world. Involves technological, economic, political, and cultural exchanges made possible largely by advances in communication, transportation, and infrastructure. Is the process by which regional economies, societies, and cultures have become integrated through a global network of political ideas through communication, transportation, and trade. The term can also refer to the transnational circulation of ideas, languages, or popular culture through acculturation.
We have all learned to live and deal with globalization; however, we rarely stop to consider the origin of this movement. The main causes that led to the development of this phenomenon are:
1. The importance of multinationals: Companies need support from their states to finance scientific and technological infrastructure, tax incentives, preferential access to public markets, and protection in trade negotiations.
2. Wishes from freer trade: the increasing interest of exporters in opening up domestic markets had a heavy weight at the beginning of globalization as it had so many barriers to international trade of goods, that the gains were minimal.
3. The technological revolution in production processes, information, telecommunications and transport.: The "Toyotismo" or flexible production system combines the advantages of craft production (product quality) with those of mass production (speed and low unit costs). Also the technological Innovations that lower the costs of moving goods and more notably information around the world.
On the other hand, in order to assess the impact of the phenomenon of globalization, these are the main effects:
- Greater Mobility of Human Resources across Countries. Globalization allows countries to source their manpower in countries with cheap labor. For instance, the manpower shortages in Taiwan, South Korea, and Malaysia provide opportunities for labor exporting countries such as the Philippines to bring their human resources to those countries for employment.
- Industrial Effect: emergence of worldwide production markets and broader access to a range of foreign products for consumers and companies. Particularly movement of material and goods between and within national boundaries. International trade in manufactured goods increased more than 100 times (from $95 billion to $12 trillion) in the 50 years since 1955. China's trade with Africa rose sevenfold during 2000-07 alone.
- Cultural Effect: growth of cross-cultural contacts; advent of new categories of consciousness and identities which embodies cultural diffusion, the desire to increase one's standard of living and enjoy foreign products and ideas, adopt new technology and practices, and participate in a "world culture". Globalization has influenced the use of language across the world. This street in Hong Kong, a former British colony, shows various signs, a few of which incorporate both Chinese and British English. Some bemoan the resulting consumerism and loss of languages. Spreading of multiculturalism, and better individual access to cultural diversity (e.g. through the export of Hollywood). Some consider such "imported" culture a danger, since it may supplant the local culture, causing reduction in diversity or even assimilation. Others consider multiculturalism to promote peace and understanding between people. A third position that gained popularity is the notion that multiculturalism to a new form of monoculture in which no distinctions exist and everyone just shift between various lifestyles in terms of music, cloth and other aspects once more firmly attached to a single culture.
In conclusion, we see the causes and consequences of globalization. The advantages and disadvantages of the phenomenon we define all of us, determining to what extent it affects us or to what extent we can deal with it without being overwhelmed and without losing our cultural essence; also, if we know who to deal with it, we will benefit in terms of knowledge and modernization.
